The Problem with Hybrid EDI/ERP Systems

In today’s fast-moving supply chain and eCommerce world, I see many businesses stuck in hybrid setups — where their ERP system imports EDI orders, but they also rely on an external portal (like ours) to handle what the ERP can’t. Things like printing labels, managing complex shipping, or handling exceptions often fall outside their ERP’s comfort zone.

The result? A fragmented process that forces teams to jump between systems, duplicate work, and maintain two versions of the same order flow. It’s burdensome, error-prone, and slows down the very efficiency EDI was meant to create.

The Reality of Integration

Every system should do what it does best. ERP systems are excellent at accounting, inventory, and resource management. EDI and integration platforms, on the other hand, excel at communication, automation, and flexibility — especially as APIs and eCommerce channels continue to evolve faster than traditional EDI maps can keep up.

Trying to force both to do everything leads to complexity and fragility. The real value comes from letting each system focus on its strengths, connected through smart, lightweight integrations.

The Path Forward

As integration landscapes shift — with APIs, real-time updates, and dynamic order flows becoming the norm — it’s time to simplify. Businesses should be evaluating where their true process value lies, and investing in integration strategies that reduce touchpoints instead of multiplying them.

Less duplication, more automation, and systems that play to their strengths — that’s how we keep up with the changing world of EDI and eCommerce.
